The mortgage interest rates can rise and fall driven by our economy and other economic indicators.

For several weeks we saw interest rates below 4%. That is a record low in our country.

• In 2005 a mortgage for $100,000.00 at 6.5% would cost $6,500.00 per year in interest.

• The same loan last month at 3.92% would cost $3,920,00 per year.

The interest rate has a direct bearing on how much home you can afford to buy.

• Currently it is reported the average 30 year fixed rate mortgage jumped to 4.08%. How long interest rates  will stay this low is anyone’s guess.

If you have been considering a home purchase it’s a good time to contact a Realtor and explore the current home inventory. It is doubtful that interest rates will drop again. More than likely they will be inclined to increase rather than decrease.

The population in the Scranton Pa area hosts a large percentage of Irish Americans.

• A recent infographic I came across shows how hard the Irish economy has been hit during the Euro financial crisis.

The graphic depicts various financial influences in the Irish economy. Housing prices have fallen more than 52%. Ireland is suffering foreclosures much like we are in this country.

• A companion article to the graphic suggests that this is a great time for Irish Americans to visit the Emerald Isle as a boost to the economy.

Traveling there about 5 years ago we found lodging and food prices to be what the Irish would call the “Dear” side.  No that’s not the same Dear as Dearest. It means pricey.

Travel sources advise that doing some pre-planning and searching out deals makes a trip to Ireland extremely affordable today.

• Summer is the high season. Spring and fall are great times to visit as the climate is fairly temperate all year long.

As of this writing the Euro was .76 to one U.S. Dollar. The last time we went to Ireland it was 1.33 U.S. to 1 Euro.

Ireland is calling all Irish sons and daughters from Scranton Pa to come home for a visit.

• Via hypodermic like fangs the rattle snake delivers its venom deeply, in such a way that it is carried by the blood stream.

The Brown Recluse Spider deposits venom under the surface of the skin. From there it is absorbed by surrounding tissue.

The results can vary from huge ulcerated infected sores, to tissue necrosis, to organ involvement, systemic infection and possibly death.

You can stir them up in the yard and harbor them on your clothing. Your pet can bring them into your living quarters.

They can lay relatively inconspicuous until you disturb their nests and they seek other hiding places.

• They like to travel along walls and can enter your home through miniscule cracks.

• The bite is painless. You have no idea you have been bitten until the symptoms start showing up.

• Their habitat is primarily the South, Mid-West and up through the Appalachians. They are definitely in the Scranton Pa area.  We encountered them with rather painful results in Virginia.

If you see an unusual eruption on your body, which is painful and looks like a boil – seek medical attention right away.

While you are working in your yard or cleaning the attic or garage be watchful of spiders nests. 

If you cannot readily identify them do not sweep them up.  They move very quickly and chances are you will just scatter them.

Scranton real estate

Home prices have shown a decline in recent years in the Scranton real estate market.

• Price drops were not as fast or significant as markets in Las Vegas, Florida, Arizona and some parts of California.
  
• Those areas were hit hard and fast early on as a result of the real estate bubble.

CoreLogic a real estate data aggregation firm reported that in the month of August home values fell in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Hazelton metro area by 11%.

The report went on to say the Scranton Pa metro area fell more than any other metro area in the state. 11% is a substantial adjustment especially for home owners who purchased their homes prior to the real estate collapse.

Inman and other economic advisers predict we will not see a recovery in the market before 2020.
